Ulteo Java Problems

This page describes the problems experienced by users when trying to access the Taxonomic Editor via the BGBM Ulteo OVD server.

Java 7 Update 51+ issue

This issue is related to the security message Application Blocked by Security Settings, with the user unable to access the ulteo session. The reason for this problem is the new updates from Java (from version 7 update 51) and the fact that the ulteo installation currently does not have a signed / trusted certificate.

As mentioned here

Starting with Java 7 Update 51, applications without a certificate (i.e. unsigned apps), or missing application Name and Publisher information are blocked by default. Running this kind of application is potentially unsafe and present higher level of risk.

In this case an exception needs to be added to the Java Control Panel installed on the operating system to allow specific sites to ignore the message. This requires an update of the java version installed on the operating system to >= Version 7 update 51 available here Please note that this install is for the operating system and is different from the web browser plugin installation.

With the latest version of java installed, the exception needs to be added to the Java Control Panel for the various operating systems,

The procedure to add the exception to the java control panel can be found here and the URL to be used is http://cdmeditor.bgbm.fu-berlin.de

Java plugin issue

The current version (v2.5.1) of the Ulteo OVD server in use at cdmeditor does not seem to function correctly when accessed via browsers installed with Java plugins 1.7.xx.

The reason for the error seems to be a check in the Ulteo OVD server version v2.5.1, which rejects any Java JVM or Plugin which does not originate from the vendors 'Apple' or 'Sun Microsystems'.

Falling back to earlier versions of the Java plugin may solve the problem, but this is not recommended due to a major security bug fix as described here

The latest versions of the Java plugins (> 7.0.45xxx) will popup two warning messages which need to be accepted. We will be trying to fix this problem for future version of the plugin.

Symptoms

Symptoms of this problem could be,

  • an error message "err01 no java" instead of the "Log In" button.

  • a java security error after the user has succesfully logged in

  • a blank white screen with no information after the user has logged in succesfully logged in

Workaround

Initial tests have shown that this problem exists on Firefox, Internet Explorer and Chrome (other browsers have not yet been tested).

Possible workarounds for the various browsers are described below,

Firefox

2 Two solutions:

  • If see the "err01 no java" symptom. Make sure that the password field has the focus by e.g. clicking on it and hit the Enter key , this should log you in.

  • A possible workaround is to 'reset Firefox' as described here here Please note that even though Firefox mentions that it saves the bookmarks, it would be safe to back them up in any case.

Internet Explorer

No workaround yet.

Chrome

No workaround yet.

Java ssh connection problem

After a successful login into the Ulteo session the online desktop appears for a brief moment and then disappears with the error message "Java: SSH connection error".

This is usually due to firewall settings which prevent the Ulteo Java client on the browser from connecting to the BGBM Ulteo server. In this case, it would be useful to first contact your organisation's IT support to determine why the access is restricted.
