10 | |||
11 | |||
12 | **1. Tool** |
||
13 | |||
14 | |||
15 | 1.1 Software which is used to carry out, or to directly support, a task (Mark Jackson, 2006). |
||
16 | |||
17 | |||
18 | 1.2 Software products specifically designed to accomplish the requirements of Cyber-taxonomy. N.B. This can include generic software applications such as spread sheets which have been specifically adapted to support Cyber-taxonomy (Martin Pullan?, 2006). |
||
19 | |||
20 | |||
21 | **2. Cybersystematics** |
||
22 | |||
23 | |||
24 | 2.1 The process by which information available in, or converted into from non digital sources, standardized electronic format is collated analysed and synthesised into a digital representation of the (evolutionary) relationships between taxa. In this sense Cybersystematics utilises the end products of Cyber-taxonomy (Martin Pullan?, 2006). |
||
25 | |||
26 | |||
27 | **3. Cyber-sytematic tools** |
||
28 | |||
29 | |||
30 | 3.1 Software products specifically designed to accomplish the requirements of Cybersystematics. N.B. This can include generic software applications such as spread sheets which have been specifically adapted to support cyber-systematics (Martin Pullan?, 2006). |

45 | **Commentary** |
||
46 | |||
47 | |||
48 | These definitions (1.2, 2.1 & 3.1) exclude such things as identification tools since these are concerned with the application of taxonomy and not the process of taxonomy – a third term is required to cover these but I can’t think what it might be since we don’t have a term equivalent to taxonomy or systematics that covers these – Cyber-identification? (too specific perhaps but then again what other non-taxonomic applications of taxonomy are there)(Mark Jackson, 07.11.2006). |
