Currently the portal creates links to references by turning the whole reference string into a link. Since citation strings tend to be lengthy, this often causes confusion confusing and unclear page appearances. A better approach to make reference links would be to append a clickable icon to the citation string. Since this is an internal link a modified variant of the https://fontawesome.com/icons/external-link-alt?style=solid icon with inwards arrow could be used. This would allow to also add reference links in footnotes without cluttering the portal pages too much.
