WGB:

Generally this works. Only the year should be improved as the year from sections like book sections might be taken from the in-reference. Maybe we can generally show either the year of the reference itself or if this does not exist the year of the in-reference if an inreference exists (this is similarly implemented for formatting of book sections).

Generally this works now. I only wonder if it is really wanted to only show the year. In case of a freetext date nothing is shown now which might be unwanted.

@Walter, what do you think should we also show freetext data or generally the whole datestring and not only the year?

mail WB:

Hello,
my use cases for display of the publication year right now are
(i) the selection of nom. references in the details view for authors of multiple titles (e.g. Caryophyllales, Bolus, Jacobsen). The output here can be rather wide once titles of articles etc. have been entered, the year in the end is often the decisive fact for the selection. And sorting apparently depends on the details of the entry (with last name / only nom. ref. etc.) which makes it difficult to select the cleaned record where there are duplicates. The publication year as the sort order would already be very helpful here, and/or the citation of the year directly following author/team.
(ii) a special case: Selection of a homonym in the name relation box (although here only the full nom. citation would solve the issue – I have recently encountered a number of homonyms in the same publication – only the page number distinguishing the two taxa)
(iii) – with reference to the feature request below: deduplication and other data cleaning tasks of records using the bulk editor for references. Here for me the year is sufficient, also because the table should be kept as lean as possible. For deduplication the freetext date would not be helpful, because it won’t sort. On the contrary, for general data cleaning those missing years would sort out as records that need attention.
Cheers
Walter

so I would keep it like it is?

difficult to say. Maybe we can put the result of toString in brackets behind the year, if and only if the result differs from the year. This way the column is sortable by year but still it is obvious if there is more data available for date published (which is important information during deduplication).

now, the string representation is added if the year differs from the string representation of the publication date.

Great, this is looks (IMO).

There is only a minor open issue: if subreference has no date data and the inreference has date data which is not only a year the value shown in brackets is "(null)"

this was a copy&paste error, the string representation of the date of the reference was set in brackets, not the string representation of the publication date of the inReference.
