Generally all formatter (once unified) should also have an invoke method including a locale parameter.

For reference formatting this could be used e.g. for transforming "in" to "en" in Spanish. (Field)Unit formatting could choose the correct language translation.

However, it will be difficult for those cases where the formatter string is also cached and used for search. Needs further discussion.
