This page is about the difference between the zoological code compared to the botanical
Table of Contents
A short and quick comparison of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) and the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). There also is a very useful [http://scientific.thomson.com/support/products/zr/zoological-glossary/ They look very similar and it seems they mostly use a different formatting for the same underlying ideas - sometimes not expressed explicitly though in one or the other.
Author citations
- [http://www.iczn.org/iczn/includes/page.jsp?booksection=contents&chapter=11&nfv= * Generic format (not sure if zoologists call basionyms basionyms):
- Genus (Subgenus) epithethon subspecies (BasAuthor?, BasYear?) Author, Year
- Examples:
- Methiolopsis geniculata (Stål, 1878) Rehn, 1957
- only subspecies as infraspecific rank allowed! all others are not covered by code. Therefore no rank abbreviation needed and simple trinomens are used.
- [http://www.iczn.org/iczn/includes/page.jsp?article=51&nfv= * authors are NEVER abbreviated
- Bot:
- Generic format:
- Genus epithethon rankabbrev infraspecies (BasAuthor? ex ExBasAuthor?) Author ex ExAuthor?
Autonyms
Homonyms
- Zoo: senior/junior Hom.
- secondary Hom. are names with the same genus name, but not at the same time. Therefore there is no problem or need to change them.
- Bot: later/earlier Hom.
Misapplied names
cite with "non xxx"
Subgenera
Zoo: if a subgenus exists it may be cited in paranthesis between the genus and the species epitheton. E.g: Ala (lies) alume 1973 Bot: subgenera are not part of a species name.
orthographical variants
seem to be treated the same way.
- Zoo: correct original spelling and subsequent spellings: emendation, incorrect subsequent spelling or a mandatory change.
sensu
same thing
- Zoo: Cancer pagurus Linnaeus sensu Latreille
